Chapter Ten

Mabel sighed and looked askance at her cell phone. It was one of the rare nights when Will hadn’t stayed with her and, no longer able to fall asleep without him, she had reverted to her late hours. Should she answer it? Thanks to Caller ID, she knew it was Will and thanks to the clock function, she knew he wasn’t calling in a happy frame of mind. Still, she didn’t want to endanger her count, so she grimaced and hit answer. “Hello?”

“Mabel Ann Wainwright you need to be in bed. It’s three a.m. and that outfit looks suspiciously like your robe. Do you remember the night we looked at your cupola from the woods and I told you that I expected you to be completely dressed anytime you were up there? Robes don’t count as being sufficiently dressed, in my opinion. Now, I’m willin’ to believe that my sleepy eyes just aren’t workin’ quite right if the light goes off in the next minute and stays off for the rest of the night. Or do I need to come over there and put you to bed with a well warmed butt?”

She gasped and hit the light switch. “You go to bed at eleven. Why are you up?”

“Turnin’ off the light isn’t good enough, little girl,” he growled. “The light from the hallway below and your laptop are still lightin’ you up. I repeat, you need to be in bed!”

“You can’t make me! Writers keep odd hours.”

He sighed. “Do you want to re-think what you just said? Am I now supposed to regress to playground level and say ‘I can make you’? Because I can promise you that you won’t like it, if I do have to come over there and make you go to bed. And you may be a writer, but you aren’t workin’ right now, so don’t hide behind that. Go to bed, MaeBelle!”

“Okay, okay,” she soothed. “I’m shutting it down. How do you know I wasn’t working? And why are you awake?”

He chuckled. “I’m not divulgin’ my secrets. We’re gonna have us a discussion about this tomorrow, or rather, later today. The only light I better see comin’ from your house for the rest of the night is the glow from the night light in your bathroom.”

“Okay, okay! The laptop is shut down; I’m back in my bedroom. I’m being good. This discussion is going to be the talking kind, right? Not the spanking kind?”

“I’m notin’ the distinction that you’re in your bedroom, not your bed. Care to explain that?”

He heard rustling. “Okay, I’m in bed now. I just had to take off my perfectly acceptable clothes and hang them up. You yelled at me to do a better job of putting away my clothes, so I am.”

“Three a.m. is not the best time to start cleanin’ your room.”

“I’m not! Just putting away the clothes I was wearing. I want to hang up and go to sleep now, it’s late.”

He growled, “Your sassiness is not well received, little girl.
